The success of the award-winning Grenada High School Band has been a big draw for middle school students, who work their way up through all three years of middle school.
In the 6th Grade Band, students select their instrument and begin learning the fundamental techniques of performing. By late fall, they are performing well enough to participate in Band Night, a showcase of the entire band program at Charger Stadium. By spring, they’ve learned enough to perform a selection of music for a community concert and a showcase for 5th graders who will be coming up to the middle school.
In the 7th Grade Band, students are challenged with more complex music and begin to audition to compete for choice parts. They march and perform in the Grenada Christmas Parade as well as participate in seasonal concerts. The band also performs in its first competition, the Dr. Joe Barry Mullins Band Festival here in Grenada.
In the 8th Grade Band, students expand their knowledge in both reading and performing music, growing closer to mastery of their instrument. The band travels to one GHS away football game to serve as the pep band in the bleachers, as well as march and perform in the Christmas parade. In the spring, the 8th grade band performs at the Dr. Joe Barry Mullins Band Festival, hosted by Grenada, and consistently receives superior ratings in concert performance and sight reading. The primary goal of the 8th Grade Band is to fully prepare the students to graduate to the prestigious Grenada High School Band.
